Eckhart Tolle.

A genius of our time.

In his bestseller, The Power of Now, he talks about how to calm our chatty analytical mind and become present or spiritually enlightened, as he puts it. He suggests that to become present you must observe yourself, or witness yourself.

His teachings articulate to observe the world through stillness and awareness. Observe your energy, your turbulence, and your feelings and give it your gentle embrace. In a nutshell, he says to accept the simplicity of the moment and don’t let your mind add a story to it.

Often we get so involved and worked up in the ‘story’ of our lives that we forget to appreciate the present moment. Recently I have had a massive life change, and with this, I have become more aware of myself, my decisions and my life. I have started to observe my behaviour more and get to know myself better. Being out of my usual comfort zone, I began to see myself slipping into old ways and considering doing the same old things that I used to do…the well-trodden path that took me nowhere. So I tested myself. I decided to observe my behaviour for a week and then assess it over the weekend and it worked! I realised exactly what I was doing…because I stepped out of my little world, and witnessed the bigger picture. It’s human nature – we are creatures of habit and it‘s very easy to go back to the old ways of doing things. However, by stepping outside of yourself, meditating and observing myself I became self-aware. A very attractive trait in a person.

Do you ever get a world of clarity from having a close friend give you their own take on your situation (then you whack your palm to your forehead and think ‘Doh! Of Course’! ) It’s because they can see the bigger picture and they are observing your behaviour from afar and can pin point where it’s going wrong or right. The idea from Eckart Tolle is to be able to observe yourself and your actions and make the improvements or rectifications to make your life better, without needing someone else. And it works!

For example, this week, I notified a friend that she should stop going around to everyone telling them how much weight she had gained. She had written this story in her mind that she had put on over 10kg of weight, was fat & unattractive and decided to tell everyone in ear shot about it, all day, every day. So I told her to stop and that what she puts out there, she will get back…and she doesn’t want to gain more weight! I am also a massive fan of The Secret – what you put out is what you get back – so I suggested she try and stop speaking about her weight gain and notice the difference in her mind-set and her life.

People tend to talk about what’s going on in their mind, negative or positive, usually the former for some stupid reason. The thing is, once you start to talk about the negative sh!t in your life, others start to realise it, and associate it with who you are, and in turn you start attracting more of it. And you don’t want people to think you are a fat, unhappy whinger, do you? No. So don’t talk about it! It’s simple. The law of attraction is a powerful tool to implement into your life. If you speak about all the positive stuff going on in your life, the negative things will become smaller…and before you know it you will only start to realise the good stuff. You can train your mind; it’s a muscle to be worked on.

So give this a go for a week and become self aware….

Observe what you are doing, your actions.

Observe your mind.

Observe your thoughts.

Observe your body language.

Observe your words and your language; your tone; your pitch.

Observe the stories you tell people.

Observe your emotions and feelings.

Be conscious and wake up to yourself! Think about how people will perceive you if you say what you’re going to say. Are you saying it or doing it because it is out of habit or because that’s what you feel like you identify with it?

Or would you prefer to change it and break out of the negative state of mind or routine?

Think about what you want to attract into your life… Then try to only think and talk about those things, instead of what you don’t want in your life.

Go and observe yourself….and come back to me with what you discover….
